Belperron, Herz

Herz Belperron (1900 - 1983)

Suzann Herlperron - Herz Belperron Suzanne Belperron (1900-1983) born in France in 1900 joined, after her study at the Ecole des Beauxis-Arts in Besançon, the firm of René Boivin. Here she developed her unique style. In 1933 she started as a designer for the Parisan dealer in precious stones, Bernard HERZ. She designed exclusively under the Herz name and experimented with varous gemstones like rockcrystal and chalcedony; its sensous shapes set with precious and semi-precious stones. She used motifs from various cultures. This daring new look was considered to be ”brilliant and barbaric”. Bernard Herz died in a concentration camp during World War II. After the war the partnership continued with his son Jean under the name Herz-Belperron. She is considered to be the most important of all the woman jewellers in the 20th century. Many European royals and Hollywood stars bought her jewels. The Dutchess of Windsor owned many pieces of Belperron. She never signed her work becase as she stated ”my style is my signature”.
